Conor Fed Profile.jpg

Could you introduce yourself?!

Hello, my name is Conor Federico and I'm a CORU-registered Chartered Physiotherapist. In addition, I'm a qualified Athletic & Rehabilitation Therapist.

What / where did you study?

I initially attended Ballina primary school, and stayed in the locality for secondary where I attended St. Annes Community College, Killaloe. It was around this time that I developed my passion for Physiotherapy, as I wanted a profession where I could help people of all ages recover and improve their physical health.

After secondary school, I attended the Technological University of the Shannon where I completed my 4-year degree in Athletic & Rehabilitation Therapy. In 2021, I graduated with a 2.1 Honours degree.

Before beginning my Masters in Physiotherapy degree, I completed additional courses to expand my knowledge, and enhance my clinical skills.
These included:

 Dry Needling
+   Low Back Pain Management
  Whiplash & Neck Pain
+   Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage (IASTM)

I then progressed to my Masters degree in Physiotherapy, which I completed in the University of Limerick, graduating with Honours (2.1).

What kind of clinical experience do you have?
Throughout both my degrees, I was fortunate to work with all populations, which really enhanced my clinical skills and set me up for working in a Private Practice setting. I had the opportunity to work with multiple sports teams (both pitch side and in a clinical setting), which provided a great understanding of what it takes to progress physical performance to higher levels.

I also gained over 1,000 hours' experience working with general populations, ranging from adolescents with sports injuries to older adults with clinical conditions that impacted their daily activities.

I have also worked within the HSE, assisting patients across all aspects of the profession (attending to musculoskeletal, neurological and respiratory presentations). These settings ranged from outpatients in Portlaoise Hospital, inpatient older adults in University Hospital Limerick alongside the palliative care unit in Milford Hospice

By having such a diverse experience, I have a good understanding of how to manage a multitude of conditions at various stages of their progression.

My highlight so far would definitely be working in a musculoskeletal setting in which I can assist all age groups in their recovery. This is where I believe we need to bridge the gap in allowing you to progress beyond your baseline levels in order to reduce the risks of future injuries.

What are your professional interests / likes?

Having grown up playing sport and attending Physiotherapy for my own injuries, I have always had a strong interest in Musculoskeletal injuries (i.e. treating muscle, bone, tendon, ligament and joint injuries).

Having completed research on the effects of chronic injuries, this has been an interest of mine throughout my studies thus far. This research has helped me to understand the true effects of these conditions, both physically and psychologically, and the need for a multifactorial approach in ensuring they are not a recurring experience.

The absolute best part of the job has to be seeing a patient progress and achieve the goals they have set from the first session, being a part of this journey to self-managing their physical health. I also love the social aspect this involves, and believe a crucial part of a successful training / rehabilitation plan must begin with good communication and being on the same page of patient orientated goals

What kind of personal interests do you have?

I’ve always been a huge Soccer fan, having played it from a young age and following the English Premier League growing up. I also enjoyed playing Hurling, Rugby and Basketball before sticking to the one sport.

I like to keep active on the weekends and would often go for a hike or long walk around the village of Ballina with family to keep busy alongside my gym routines. I believe it’s important to have a nice combination of both strength / cardiovascular training for your overall health.

I have definitely caught the travel bug as well! So, I would often spend a weekend away with my family and friends whether it be a European trip or exploring new parts of the country. Inis Mor being a particular favourite of mine!

Tell us something about yourself that others may not know?!

While the name may not suggest, I have family connections to Ballina leading back over 4 generations and can honestly say I believe there isn’t a nicer place to live in the country!

I was born in London to Italian / Irish parents but moved back to my Irish roots when I was 5 years old and have absolutely loved growing up with the Irish culture.

Anything else you'd like to add?

I’m really excited to assist you in any way possible in getting beyond recovery and setting up the best pathways to ensure you aren’t experiencing similar setbacks along the way.

No matter what query you have, big or small, please always ensure to ask. It may be the final piece of the puzzle we need in understanding the best route forward to improving your physical health.

Best wishes,

Conor
