Falls Prevention Classes: Helping to Address a Silent Epidemic

Why we believe this New Class is so important:
As Physiotherapists, we are unfortunately acutely aware of just how prevalent Falls are, and how devastating they can be.
To provide an insight, studies show that One-Third of Individuals Over the Age of 65 will experience at least One Fall a Year, a figure that rises to Half of the Population Over 80.
HSE-published statistics also show that 75% of All Injuries requiring Medical Attention in Older Adults are the result of Falls (whilst rather distressingly, after Road Traffic Injuries, Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide; Source: WHO).

What causes Falls to occur?
The highest indicator for Fall Risk is Muscle Weakness, with Individuals with Reduced Physical Fitness being 4 to 5 Times more likely to suffer a fall.
Thankfully through targeted Strength Training and Functional Exercises, it is possible to Increase both Muscle Mass and Bone Density, which significantly reduces the likelihood of Falls, and the resultant injuries.
These particular Exercise Types not only Lower One’s Fall Risk but also Mitigate the Risk of developing Diseases such as Osteoporosis, Type 2 Diabetes, and Heart Disease (amongst many others).

1) Learn the Fundamental Principles on how to Prevent Falls
2) Simultaneously enhance their Overall Functionality, Independence, and Quality of Life.

The consequences that arise from Falls are undoubtedly a major concern for the older population, but through a combination of Education, Advice, and Structured Exercise, this Chartered Physio-guided Programme equips participants with the tools required to both prevent falls, and handle them with confidence should they possibly occur.
